The History of Valentine's Day & Sustainable Gift Guide

The History of Valentine's Day & Sustainable Gift Guide

Have you ever wondered why we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day? So many holidays have interesting historical beginnings…or at least legends as to their origin.

As we near February 14th I began to wonder- who is St. Valentine? Is there an actual person associated with this celebration? Any holiday that involves a bit of pink is reason enough to celebrate but I knew there had to be more to this sweet celebration!

It turns out that the holiday does get its name from an actual saint. The popular belief about St. Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the “law” and secretly arranged marriages. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. While in jail he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and when he was taken to be killed on February 14th he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine.”

Wow, that is a third century soap opera! Another fun origin story is that the first Valentine’s Day was actually celebrated in the year 496. It stems from a Roman festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February. It was when the Romans officially celebrated the beginning of Spring. As part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They would be “boyfriend and girlfriend” throughout the festival and sometimes they would get married.

Doesn’t this sound a lot like the reality dating shows so popular today? What goes around comes around…even from as far back as 496! Later the Catholic Church combined both celebrations into what we currently celebrate as St. Valentine’s Day! Voilà!

Any holiday that puts more LOVE into the world is at the top of my list! I like the idea that this holiday celebrates with both small tokens of affection and more personal thoughtful gifts! I love the classic gifts – a card, flowers, chocolate, etc. but this year I wanted to put together items from The Guild that can bring a bit of LOVE to your favorite people- including yourself…remember self-love is a wonderful and necessary thing!
